Student Behavioral Model Based Prefetching in Online Tutoring System

چکیده
Web-based tutoring systems provide important advantages as a supplement to traditional classroom instruction. MANIC (Multimedia Asynchronous Networked Individualized Courseware) is an interactive multimedia WWWbased tutoring system that was originally developed in 1997 and was used by more than 200 users during the Spring 1997 semester to listen to, and view, the stored audio lectures and lecture notes for a full-semester seniorlevel Networking course at the University of Massachusetts [9]. Previous work has been done to analyze and improve the performance of MANIC from both system’s and users’ perspective [9] providing empirical and analytical characterizations of observed user behavior in MANIC. The work in [9] focused on studying the sessionlevel behavior (e.g, the length of individual sessions) and interactive user behavior (e.g., the time between starting/stopping/pausing the audio within a session). [14] built and analyze a student model for MANIC, and determining the level of difficulty and the learning style preferences of a student by using a Naive Bayes Classifier.

Network Implementation of an Intelligent Tutoring System Synthesis Project Report
Intelligent tutoring systems provide eeective instruction, increasing learning and reducing delivery time. However, most of these systems have been delivered as standalone applications, which do not support multiple users at remote locations. An alternative to this kind of delivery mechanism is to use computer networks. Network-based intelligent tutoring systems provide more exibility in both e...
متن کاملDistributed Case Based Reasoning for Intelligent Tutoring System: An Agent Based Student Modeling Paradigm
Online learning with Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) is becoming very popular where the system models the student’s learning behavior and presents to the student the learning material (content, questions-answers, assignments) accordingly. In today’s distributed computing environment, the tutoring system can take advantage of networking to utilize the model for a student for students from othe...
متن کاملAutomated Session-Quality Assessment for Human Tutoring Based on Expert Ratings of Tutoring Success
Archived transcripts from tens of millions of online human tutoring sessions potentially contain important knowledge about how online tutors help, or fail to help, students learn. However, without ways of automatically analyzing these large corpora, any knowledge in this data will remain buried. One way to approach this issue is to train an estimator for the learning effectiveness of an online ...
متن کاملA Dynamic Mixture Model to Detect Student Motivation and Proficiency
Unmotivated students do not reap the full rewards of using a computer-based intelligent tutoring system. Detection of improper behavior is thus an important component of an online student model. To meet this challenge, we present a dynamic mixture model based on Item Response Theory. This model, which simultaneously estimates a student’s proficiency and changing motivation level, was tested wit...
متن کاملAffective states and state tests: Investigating how affect and engagement during the school year predict end of year learning outcomes
In this paper, we investigate the correspondence between student affect and behavioral engagement in a web-based tutoring platform throughout the school year and learning outcomes at the end of the year, on a high-stakes mathematics exam. The relationships between affect, behavioral engagement, and learning outcomes have been previously studied, but not in a manner that is both longitudinal and...
